  1. No one wants on-screen lines and boxes replaced with rows of
  2. accented letters when they print screen dumps to an HP
  3. LaserJet. I found a more permanent way to fix the problem
  4. than the one proposed by J. L. Richards ["Accidental
  5. Accents," Star-Dot-Star, January 1991].

  7. Here's the source of the problem: LaserJets are shipped from
  8. the factory defaulted to the Roman-8 symbol set, and Roman-8
  9. doesn't include the line-drawing characters needed to
  10. reproduce screens with lines and boxes.
  11.  
  12. To change the LaserJet's default symbol set to one that
  13. includes the line-drawing characters without sacrificing
  14. accented characters, do the following:
  15.  
  16. 1. Press the printer's ONLINE key to take the device off
  17.    line.
  18.  
  19. 2. Hold down the MENU key for 5 or 10 seconds until
  20.    `SYM SET=ROMAN-8*' appears in the display window.
  21.  
  22. 3. Press the + and/or -- key to scroll through the symbol
  23.    set options. When you see `SYM SET = IBM-US', press the
  24.    ENTER RESET MENU key to mark the selection with an
  25.    asterisk.

  27. 4. Press the MENU key repeatedly until `00 READY' appears in
  28.    the display window.

  30. 5. Hold down the CONTINUE RESET key until `07 RESET' appears
  31.    in the display window. This step saves your selections as
  32.    the new default.

  34. To verify your work, go to a screen with lines and boxes on
  35. it--just about any program with a character-based menu
  36. interface will do--and press <Shift>-<Print Screen>. Take
  37. your printer off line, press the FORM FEED key, and put it
  38. on line again. The resulting printout will show your lines
  39. where they should be.
